Graduate Program.After Duke

One of the tests of excellence for any school is the quality of its alumni. And Duke BME is proud to have produced many leaders in both industry and academics since 1972.

Graduates of the BME program have gone on to careers in industrial research and development groups, to advance new products and techniques for health services and in biological science markets; in medical centers, to improve health services and to engage in research which may be basic or clinical; and in academic institutions, to expand or initiate biomedical engineering programs.

Examples of Duke BME alumni in industry are Richard Martin (Ph.D., 1972), President and CEO of Medtronic/Physio-Control Inc. Based on his graduate research at Duke, Michael Ramsey (MD, 1969, Ph.D., 1975) founded Critikon, Inc., which later became the Critikon Division of Johnson & Johnson. Paul Magnin (Ph.D., 1981) is President and CEO of Coherent Diagnostics, Inc. John Allison (Ph.D., 1987) is Director of Acuson Laboratories. In addition, several recent alumni have formed BME-oriented start-up companies, bringing new BME technologies to the marketplace.

Six graduate alumni have been, or are currently, serving as chairs of Biomedical Engineering Departments. Over thirty Duke BME graduate alumni are currently tenured or tenure-track faculty.

Following is placement information for Duke BME's most recent doctoral graduates.
