Tenure Track Faculty Positions
- Duke University Department of Biomedical Engineering
Duke Global Health Institute
Joint Faculty Position
The Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) at Duke University and the Duke Global Health Institute (DGHI) seek a faculty candidate who will lead the development of bioengineering tools for applications to Global Health. We are particularly interested in individuals with expertise in developing point of care diagnostics and the modeling of the spread of infectious disease. Rank is open and will depend on the qualifications and experience of the candidate. While applications from candidates with expertise in all areas of BME applied to Global Health are encouraged, we are particularly interested in candidates with expertise related to nanotechnology and biomaterials, gene and drug delivery, imaging, genomic technologies and biomolecular modeling.
We seek applicants with a vision of collaboration and a research and teaching focus that is cross-disciplinary. Candidates must have a doctorate in biomedical engineering, or a related field of science or engineering, and an outstanding record of accomplishment. The successful candidate will be expected to develop an active externally funded research program, to build strong ties between DGHI and BME, initiate collaborative research with other faculty at Duke University and the Medical Center, and have a strong commitment to teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Applications from women and under-represented minority groups are strongly encouraged.
The application materials must include a curriculum vitae (with address, phone number, and e-mail address); statements of research and teaching interests; and names, addresses, phone numbers, and e-mail addresses of three references. For full consideration, please submit your application by December 31, 2009.

Research Faculty Positions
- Assistant Research Professor
The Department of Biomedical Engineering in the Pratt School of Engineering at Duke University invites applications for an immediate opening of a non-tenure track position of Assistant Research Professor.
Consistently ranked as one of the top biomedical engineering programs in the nation, the Biomedical Engineering Department (BME) at Duke University provides a superior interdisciplinary research and education environment that prepares graduates to be leaders in the integration of engineering and biology for the detection and treatment of human disease. A unique aspect of the program is the integration of research and education. Over two-thirds of BME undergraduates are involved in independent study research projects. Research collaborations also exist with many Medical Center departments, the Duke Comprehensive Cancer Center, and the Center for In Vivo Microscopy.
The responsibilities of the non-tenure track position of Assistant Research Professor will include performing research in biotransport, teaching an advanced-intermediate course in biotransport, mentoring graduate and undergraduate students, and managing a lab, all with the intent of moving towards an independent academic career. While the focus of the position is upon research, teaching opportunities may become available based upon department needs.
Candidates must hold a doctoral degree in Bioengineering/Biomedical Engineering with superb academic credentials and express intent in developing an independent academic career. Additional qualifications include: more than one year of post-doctoral training, prior experience with didactic teaching of undergraduates in biotransport, substantial experience with mentoring undergraduate and graduate students, and documented success with competitive grant writing. The initial research agenda will focus on how the body’s inflammatory response affects the transport of blood borne analytes to implanted sensors. The candidate therefore should possess expertise in cell culture, immunofluorescence labeling, western blots, PCR, flow cytometry, and laser scanning confocal microscopy.
Applicants should send a cover letter, curriculum vitae, and names and contact information of three references to: Assistant Research Professor Search in Biotransport, Department of Biomedical Engineering, Duke University, Box 90281, Durham, NC, 27708. Duke University is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Employer.
